    I saw this band a few weeks ago open for Los Lobos at a transcendent free concert by the river in Albany. They're Anglo musicians who wear Mexican wrestling masks, and have made this album of Spanish language versions of 60s pop songs. "Hang on Sloopy" becomes "Hey Lupe" etc... also including "Loco te patina el Coco" (Wild Thing) and "El Microscopicio bikini" (Dizzy Miss Lizzie). Featuring the best instrumentalists you've never heard before, plus the vocal stylings of Big Sandy. An essential purchase, and then check out the segment Terry Gross did with them on

    on Fresh Air.

More from Weird New Jersey

How weird is this?  Check out the last graf of the AP story about NJ Gov. Jon Corzine's accident. Actually, calling Cozine the "third straight" governor is false, and not just because it's a slur on Mr. McGreevey.  According to Wikipedia, Governor Donald DiFrancesco and Acting Govenor Richard Codey (among others) held office between Whitman and McGreevey.  Why do I notice these things?

Corzine was the third straight New Jersey governor to break a leg while in office. James E. McGreevey broke his left leg in 2002 during a nighttime walk on the beach, and Christie Whitman broke her right leg while skiing in the Swiss Alps in 1999.

Imus Laughs Last?

Hello again, or good evening.  The New York Times has the story I've been waiting for on the Don Imus affair.  The clip of Imus' remarks show the culpability of Imus' producer Bernie McGuirk, who egged the I-man on to unsuspected depth, and not in the C. K. Dexter Haven sense of the word.  I used to enjoy listen to Don Imus when he was just another coke-addled New York DJ, on AM radio the summer I had a job taking water samples from swim clubs and apartment buildings in New Jersey.  "And here's a song I wrote," Imus would invariably say as he introduced the latest mindless hit single.I was amazed he came back as a gatekeeper into popular culture for fuddy duddy politicians and reporters. The man is a survivor.

So the news today that  CBS Radio has fired Imus leaves me wondering just how this story will play out over time.  Can anyone not look at Don Imus and say, "perfect for satellite radio?"  I predict that after he makes the obligatory mea culpa media tour, he emerges with a new deal.  But of course, I've been wrong so many times before...
